Museum Projects

Each year a new topic is featured to display different sections of the collection.

One of the projects for 2007 relates to Music in the Hills

A concert in the village hall in early March, run in conjunction with the Trustees of the neighbouring Douglas Heritage Museum launches the programme.

There is to be a talk on the various musicians and bands native to these hills over the last fifty years at a date to be confirmed, during the summer.

Mention must be made of the successful Crawfordjohn Spring Fling music festival, originally started by the C.H.V, which flourished in the village for ten years, with concerts, ceilidhs and story-telling for young and old.

The "Fling" brought together artists from around the globe including renowned Scottish harpist and composer Karen Marshalsay (pictured left) who appeared at the 1998 festival.

Many renowned and talented musicians appeared in Crawfordjohn during the "Fling" and although it is no longer an annual event. We still welcome artists to the village hall for concerts and plays during the year.

During 2005 a major project on the life and work of Sadie McLellan Artist in Glass was created, evidence of which can be seen within the old church.

Another project has begun recording spoken history; life stories from within the community, and during 2006, a talk on covenanting times launched the season with tales of gore and treachery.

The nearby villages of Crawford, Douglas and Sanquhar have well recorded legends from these times.  Crawfordjohn was thought to harbour a spy!!
